THE ADOPTION PROCESS
Canadian families who want
to adopt children from India must first make a formal application to their
provincial government and then make application to CARA: the government agency
in India.
To initiate the process,
the services of a licensed agency must be engaged to prepare the documentation
and liaison with appropriate government offices and agencies in Canada and
India.
Home studies will be
completed by a Licensed Adoption Practitioner. The results of the Home Study are
submitted to the Provincial Government authorities for review, along with other
supporting documents.
The adoptive parents Dossier is then submitted to an Indian Recognized
Placement Agency approved by CARA for assessment. The decision made in
respect to each case is based on priority as stipulated by CARA guidelines for
processing.
First
Priority: Adoptive Parents of Indian Origin
living within India;
Second Priority:
Adoptive Parents of Indian Origin living outside India;
Third Priority:
Adoptive Parents of Non Indian Origin;
Once an adoptive family has been approved by CARA and a child
matched with the family, a proposal is sent by the Indian recognized placement
Agency to Worldview Adoption Association;
Worldview
Adoption Association, along with an Approved Adoption Practitioner will present
the proposal to the adoptive family;
Once the prospective
adoptive parents have accepted the proposal and received confirmation from the
Orphanage, the prospective parents may visit India to effect pre-placement and
formalize the adoption; or arrange for legal guardianship as Indian law may
require before bringing the child to Canada.
Once the child is settled
in Canada further progress reports will continue on a semi-annual basis for a
period of 3 years.
